Ok, so I’m confused. Apparently a man in Ohio who is on death-row for the rape and murder of two women is claiming that he is too fat to execute. His lawyers say that his weight, along with the medication he is taking for migraines might effect the first of three drugs used in the lethal injection process. It’s the first drug that puts the inmate to sleep before the other two drugs are injected. If the first drug doesn’t work correctly and the inmate is awake for the other two injections, then the execution would be excruciating.
So let me see if I have this right… We can’t execute this man because we might cause him pain? Never mind the pain the two young women he raped and killed experienced… This isn’t about justice, it’s about being barbaric… right? It’s too barbaric to allow him to experience pain while we kill him.
So… why are we killing him again? Is this supposed to be a deterrent? Is that why? It’s not like he’s there for rehabilitation, he’s a lifer. If we don’t kill him, then we are going to give him food and shelter for the rest of his life, the company of peers, TV, even the internet I hear. Or, he can have an excruciating death. Hmmm… which is the better deterrent you suppose?
I think they had it right in the dark ages. Time for execution?… Get the guy with the big axe. Swoosh! SMACK!… in the public square. Quick and wildly spectacular. If you were thinking of doing something similar, you might just think again after seeing your peer’s body in a pool of their own blood.
Which is more barbaric, a quick death that might actually mean something, or keeping a murdering rapist alive in comfort so that he can in all probability outlive the parents to the two girls he violated and killed? I’m sure they suffer each and every day he’s alive. At least his death might provide a bit of closure to their pain.
If you are going to kill someone for a crime… If you are going to become the murderer… Then at least let it mean something.
